LED lights are all the rage, but are they worth the time and money to add them to your ATV?
To answer that question, first ask yourself, “What am I using my ATV for?”
Are you taking weekend hunting trips in no-man’s-land? Are you racing through open fields in your own backyard? Are you camping at a state park? Are you toting and transporting loads for work during the day?
The answers to these questions will help you decide how necessary LED lights are to your specific needs. However, there are plenty of reasons to want LED lights, so we’ll start there.
Why choose LED lights?
- They’re just as bright, but not as hot. In comparison to halogen lights, LED lights don’t get as hot, which lowers the risk of causing a fire or any other heat-related issues or safety concerns. And the best part is, you don’t have sacrifice visibility for that perk because LED lights are the brighter alternative!
- They require less power from your ATV. That means you can your ATV’s extra energy on other extra features.
- They last longer. By longer lasting, we’re talking up to 50,000 hours! To get the full life out of your LED light, choose one with fins and ridges designed to keep the light cool. Why? Because excess heat reduces a light’s lifespan.
- They’re affordable. As demand for LED lights has increased, so has their affordability. With that said, “affordable” is a relative term, and LED lights are priced starting in the hundreds. The fancier LED offerings can cost into the thousands. You can really spend as much or as little as you want. Generally, though, the price reflects the light’s brightness, which means you get what you pay for.
- They’re compact and lightweight. If you’re driving an ATV, you probably want it to be agile. Since LED lights are tiny, they help with that. Pick the size and shape that’s right for you.
- They’re vibration resistant. Anyone with an ATV knows the ride isn’t always a smooth one. That’s kind of the point! LEDs don’t have filaments, so a few bumps in the road don’t rattle them.
What kind of LED lights should I get?
Are you convinced yet? If so, your next order of business is to decide what kind of bulbs you want for your LED light bar—one made up of multiple smaller bulbs or of a single large bulb.
The pros and cons are obvious: If you have a light bar with several smaller bulbs, and one of the bulbs burns out, you only have to replace one small bulb. But if you have a light bar with one LED bulb, and it burns out, your expense to replace the larger bulb is much greater.
Now decide whether you want spotlights (pencil beams) or flood lights (work lights). Again, ask yourself what you’re using your ATV for:
- Are you driving at high speeds that require to to see father ahead? Then choose a spotlight.
- Are you moving more slowly, but making a lot of turns that require a broader light? Then choose a flood light.
