Enhance Workplace Mobility with A Cushman Golf Cart
October 12, 2017Essential Hunting Accessories For Golf Carts and ATVs
October 27, 2017When you use your golf cart or ATV for heavy-duty work, like farming, ranching, landscaping, or manufacturing, you might find yourself needing more than just great carrying capacity. Many ATV users will find themselves utilizing a winch for serious hauling needs.
Over time and without careful maintenance, standard ATV winches can start to fray, lose their strength, or even snap entirely.
Don’t wait until you’re stuck with a broken winch and an expensive repair bill. Consider upgrading to ensure that your ATV keeps working just as hard as you do.
What are the advantages of upgrading your ATV winch? Let’s take a look.
Synthetic Rope: Stronger Than Standard Wire
Wire is good for basic hauling jobs that don’t involve much weight or if you don’t use your winch too often.
When being able to haul heavy loads is part of the job, however, upgrading to synthetic rope is the way to go. It’s measured as 30 – 40% stronger than standard wire and has been specifically developed to be resistant to breakage and easier to manage.
When a standard wire winch breaks, there could be a potentially harmful “kickback” when it snaps. Anyone standing nearby could be seriously injured, so if your wire winch starts to show signs of fraying, replace it immediately, either with fresh wire or by switching to synthetic rope.
Synthetic rope, also commonly called “syn rope”, just doesn’t hold the same kind of kinetic energy as wire and is quite a bit lighter, so the kickback in case of a problem won’t be as strong or potentially harmful.
Does Synthetic Rope Have Any Issues to Know About?
Every winch system has potential issues, and synth rope is no different.
When unsheathed, synthetics are more susceptible to chafing, and they’re more vulnerable to the heat caused by chafing or the internal drum brake. To avoid having heat prematurely age and cause greater issues with your synthetic winch, make sure to follow the Manufacturer’s instructions carefully and always allow the winch brake to cool completely after use.
How to Make Your Synthetic Rope Winch Upgrade Last
The biggest piece of advice we can give here is simply to follow instructions for use of your synthetic rope winch for an ATV very carefully. When finished using it, be sure to respool it completely back onto the drum, taking care to ensure that the synthetic rope rolls back on neatly in rows, not in a jumble.
If you just let your wire or synthetic rope roll back on the drum haphazardly, with ropes crossing over each other, you’ll put unnecessary stress onto the rope even when it’s not being used, which will cause it to break down and need repair or replacement much earlier.
Keep a cover on the winch when it’s outside but not in use, to keep UV rays from causing damage over time. We also recommend keeping sand, grit, and dirt out of your winch by taking a few minutes when washing your ATV to also wash out the winch itself.
Follow these tips, and you’ll ensure that your upgraded ATV winch is worth the investment and will serve you well for years to come.
