Having Trouble With Your Golf Cart Clutch?
May 11, 2017
Follow These Tips on Golf Cart Summer Maintenance And More!
May 25, 2017If you drive your golf cart primarily on nicely paved roads or on fairly level, well-landscaped golf courses, you may be set with the basic lift included in the golf cart (whether new or preowned). These kits generally provide you with a comfortable ride through the neighborhood or across the green.
On the other hand, if you use your golf cart as a working vehicle on a farm or ranch, or you work in landscaping or hospitality, you may be better served by adding a lift kit and a larger set of tires that are more rugged and designed to handle rougher off-road terrain.
Today, we’ll look at the different types and heights of golf cart lift kits, to help you pick out the right customized lift kit for your golf cart!
Types of Lift Kits for Golf Carts
Drop spindle lift kits are the most popular of all lift kit types, and that’s primarily due to their overall affordability and ease of installation. They work with the standard suspension included in most golf carts, so we find they’re often ideal for those DIY-types who like to make these modifications on their own. They replace and increase your cart’s spindle length and side — giving you a wider stance for increased stability and allowing you to fit larger tires on your golf cart. Basically, if you’ve had your eye on a set of custom tires but they just don’t fit on your E-Z-Go golf cart as-is, a drop spindle lift kit may be the answer.
A-Arm kits require more time to install because they basically replace your golf cart’s front suspension. They also provide a more comfortable ride and larger tires. If you go with Heavy-Duty-style A-Arm lift kits, you’ll also receive an added circular-tubing structure to give your golf cart both a rigidity that better handles serious off-road terrain but also changes up the aesthetics in a way that the owner often loves.
Drop axle lift kits are often referred to as an “economy” solution for lift kits. This replaces your basic front axle with a “drop axle” design, which will lengthen your axle height, allowing you to replace your front axle while keeping your stock spindles as-is. Drop axle lift kits are cheaper than spindle lift kits, but installing the drop axle design takes more time.
Finally, block lift kits have a quick and easy installation to provide an instant boost in height. Block-shaped steel pieces are added under your basic suspension, lifting you up by about 4 inches. The upside to block lift kits is that they are an inexpensive option, but they provide only one height option and less flexibility than other lift kits — which can be an issue if you’re hoping to go hunting or exploring where the ground is rough.
What Height Options Are There For Golf Cart Lift Kits?
There are a variety of height options available for customizing your golf cart with a lift kit. To pick the right lift kit, first choose your ideal tires and learn how much higher you’ll need to lift your cart. Options run from 3-inch kits to 6-inch kits, with different sizes working better for different years and models of golf carts.
Currently, the most-popular size on the market is 6 inches because they provide the most space for your wheel well — even with extra passengers in your back seat.
What Should You Take Into Account When Choosing a Lift Kit?
We suggest that our customers think through the following questions when deciding which height and style of lift kit is right for them:
- Desired ride height — how much taller do you want your seated position to be?
- Stance width — do your chosen custom tires require a wider stance in your cart?
- Other customizations — are you also adding extra seating or a cargo bed?
- Wheel and tire size — do you have tires picked out or are you looking for advice?
- What you’re using your golf cart for — are you hunting, farming, or mudding at an ATV-friendly park in South Carolina?
Once you’ve taken these options into account, you’ll be in a good position to start your DIY project. If you’re not the DIY type, write down your answers to these questions and bring them over to any of our three locations in South Carolina to discuss which lift kit might be the right choice for you.
